I pass it every day during the week. When I was a kid it was birthday bowling parties and then going to Shakey's Pizza across the expressway. Later I bowled in leagues there and would just go to shoot some pins. What a loss.

I keep hearing rumors of Expressway Lanes being purchased and rebuilt. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Comment Date: 9/23/2012 Name: (Someone pretending to be) Nancy Ann LaBella
Silly me, it was brought to my attention that I left some relatives out. As most of know my son Matt has some mental problems, well they must have come from me, because I couldn't even remember that my cousin Aaron actually has 2 children, not 3. I haven't been relevant when it comes to the bowling alley in probably 30+ years. Most of the regulars probably have no clue who I am. I just couldn't help myself when I saw a chance to inject myself into a conversation that I really didn't belong. For instance, my Grandmother Gladys had struggled with alzheimer. I never really ever visited her while my Uncle Sam and his family took care of her in their home instead of putting her in a home, how nice was that? You should have realized by now that I'm shallow and self-centered. You couldn't pay me enough to care about anyone else. In closing I am a fat cow that can only feel good about myself when I demean others.

First, allow me to say how wonderful it is to hear all the wonderful, heartfelt feedback from you all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I grew up at Expressway Lanes and some of you may know me, I am Sam Blanda, Sr.'s and Gladys Blanda's only grand daughter, Nancy Ann LaBella. My and my brother Skip's photo was a permanent fixture on the juke box for many years. Sam and Gladys Blanda's immediate family members are as follows, with the latest updates, just for those of you who have been with us from the beginning:
Sam and Gladys had one daughter and one son: Nancy Blanda Lane and Sammy Blanda (aka Sam Blanda Jr.)
Sammy's one child is Aaron Sam Blanda Nancy's three children are Salvador (Skip) LaBella, Nancy Ann LaBella, Christopher (Chris) Paul Prats
If you're keeping up with the family of Sam and Gladys Blanda, here is the family information on the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Skip and Sally LaBella have one son, Bradley LaBella.
Nancy Ann LaBella has two children, Matthew Jonathan Robinson and Stephanie Anine Robinson. Chris and Katie Prats have two children, Tommy Prats and Spencer Prats.
Aaron Blanda has 3 beautiful children who many of you are fortunate enough to know.
LATEST ADDITION: Stephanie, great-granddaughter of Sam and Gladys Blanda was married last year to Brandon Atley Jones of the Myrtle Beach Joneses. Brandon and Stephanie recently had a baby girl, Meredith Ann Jones.
The family goes on and remembers fondly the bowling center and our Blanda family heritage of love and togetherness. As many of you know, that feeling of family extended to the business and to all of you. You have all been part of the family and we appreciate your kind words and the fond memories you are all such a part of in our lives. It's with sad resignation that I accept that the bowling center will not be rebuilt in the Blanda name. So much has been ripped from us because of the unfortunate event of Katrina. No one could be more disappointed than us; for ourselves but especially for our extended family - ALL OF YOU!
Please stay in touch and share with us how you and families are doing. On behalf of my little family (Nancy Blanda, Matt, Stephanie, Brandon and baby Meredith), I pray that you find togetherness and family wherever you are. From the bottom of my heart, Nancy Ann LaBella

This was a nice place to bowl before Hurricane Katrina destroyed it. It was open 24/7 and had excellent prices and the staff was friendly. The only negative was the pro shop. I never purchased anything from them because I do not patronize jerks. Too bad Expressway could not reopen after the storm.

I want to say, it is very sad to say goodbye to Great place.. It is where I meet my husband Willie. He worked in the back of the bowling alley as a pen chaser in the late 70's early 80's it will always hold a place in my heart.. Sorry for your loss Mr Blanda We will always remember you and your family..

i got done reading some post and i think if investors were needed someone needs to get word out , i understand dwane wade is building a fun center which will have lanes but , nothing beats all the great times we all had at expressway , so mr sammy if you read all these comments posted here we out here to help get things rolling . some of us on westbank don't want to go over river to bowl with the work on the huey and dealing with traffic that time of day so alot of bowling equipenT is lost to garages and gardens decor . someone please rally the troops to get a center open here .THERES MONEY TO BE MADE -- Go Saints and WHO DAT !!!!!

I am a glenrosa resident and want a bowling alley in westbank. tonnes of fun and do not want to cross the bridge to bowl anymore. somebody plaese put one in. westbank is booming now!! all of us would go...

Comment Date: 4/23/2009 Name: parking lot employee
i sit in the parking lot everyday and have to see the empty building that used to be so alive. i just wish that someone would just get up and do something about it.

Comment Date: 3/24/2009 Name: Tony Nguyen
My friends and I just got into bowling, but we are forced to drive all the way to williams just to go to all stars. Their prices are quite expensive too, and I don't think there is any place that opens 24/7 like expressway use to. We would be happy if there was an affordable bowling alley on the westbank.

Comment Date: 3/9/2009 Name: Westbank Bowler
To all reading this comment, I would like how many bowlers from the Westbank that does not bowl anymore and would return if there was a Bowling Center on the Westbank. Also Who are still bowling from the Westbank and have to cross the river to bowl.I have something in the works on opening one on the Westbank. All comments are welcome. Thanks

Thumper, Thanks for your post - good to know Gene's OK. Your address got deleted from the msg, so we still don't know it! We're at {Sorry! - we can't publish personal email addresses - B2U Staff} Please give the old boy our regards. Shame about the lanes - if we win the Euro lottery we'll come & do the job!! Best - Tony & Frances.

It would be great if someone would re-open the bowling center but it will be really difficult to re-create the atmosphere that the Blanda family gave to the establishment. Mr Sam's love for that place showed in everything he did, and Sammy and Aaron's hardwork made everyone feel like they belonged. To Tony & Frances in Oxford, UK, I was back in Gretna a few months back at The Gretna Sports Bar and I visited with Gene there, He's doing fine...the same ole' Gene. I'll be going back in October and should see him again. My Yahoo Instant Messenger ID is {deleted} so if you want me to relay a messege then IM me with your email and i'll pass it to him. Same goes for any of my friends that want to contact me. Just Instant Messege me and i'll get back to ya. I look forward to the center re-opening. Truly a historic part of Gretna.

I just wanna thank Mr.Blanda and family 4 all the fun times I had growing up at Expressway Lanes. I started bowling at 2 years old in leauge as a Pee-Wee and meet so many awesome people thier. I really miss this place and I will never forget. One day we will be together again. God bless you all.

If anyone remembers the yellow tape that was placed in the center of the lanes, it was a unique piece in my memory of the bowling joint. It was a marker for my father Fred who was mostly blind and was able to continue to bowl while his sight was diminishing. The hospitality of the place made it what it was. We need anothe bowling center on the westbank.

Comment Date: 7/24/2008 Name: Kenny
Some of you may know me, I am Sam Blanda's son. It is true, my father will not be re-opening the bowling center. It has been a roller coaster ride trying to get enough people to invest to re-open. My dad and my brother Aaron have both tried endlessly to gather enough people to invest, but to no avail. I don't have much but if anyone would like to seriously talk about getting investors, please feel free to contact me {Email address deleted - Sorry}. I think it is a very real possibility for the center to re-open, but it's going to take a great deal of money and convincing the powers that be that we can rebuild a multi-million dollar business.

Comment Date: 3/19/2008 Name: westbank guru
its great we all would like a center back open but, the reality is it would cost just to get equipment in center these days about 3 to 5 milion , i once mentioned to sammy before katrina ruined a great place that if he would redue inside of expressway that would be cost that amount , i really miss all the folks i've met over years there and their friendships .

Comment Date: 3/19/2008 Name: cotton
i really miss this place too,i grew up like alot of you in this place. as of now there is a for lease sign on building and is owed by someone else, i would reopen it if i could so we all could share the good times , expressway will always be in our hearts !

I have been going to Expressway Lanes all my life watching my parents bowl on Wednesday nights in Guy & Gals league, been a junior bowler for 12 years, then an adult bowler for the past 8 years, and me, myself hope to one day come back to this memorable place and bowl here once again. I MISS THIS PLACE SO MUCH I hope it comes back better than ever.

Well as you may have heard, we've lost Monty Roe. He left us on January 1, 2008 from what I heard. The details of his death are unclear and I do not want to start any rumors. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.

We came to the Bowl a few yrs ago and I rolled my best score ever (wasn't THAT good!!). Very sad to hear of the troubles after Katrina - does anyone know what happened to Gene Sugasti? He's an old friend who lived in Terrytown. Any news will be good - Tony & Frances in Oxford, UK

Sad to say, as for as I've been told by Sam himself, he will not be opening Expressway Lanes. Hopefully, someone will come forward and open a bowling center on the Westbank again. I wish Sam and his family the best. The Blanda family gave the westbank some wonderful bowling memories. We'll miss them and the bowling.

Comment Date: 11/13/2007 Name: \X/
Does anyone know if the building is for sale? If Sam doesn't open it back up then sell it to someone that will. With the bowling alley being opened it will cause less crime, because people will have something to do.

Comment Date: 10/1/2007 Name: A.T.

Please tell me... is it true that they finally have everything in line so that the construction of Expressway Lanes can begin? I'm hearing so many RUMORS in both directions... who can clear this up? We all miss Expressway Lanes...

Comment Date: 12/28/2006 Name: Deb Kerwin
I worked for Expressway Lanes for over 18 years before the storm. Sam is an honest and caring man and I believe he will do what ever he can to to re-open, although he may take a while. Progress seems to be slow and road blocks get in the way, but he is trying to give the westbank back it's bowling center. I know that once he does, it will be even better than before.

Expressway Lanes was severely damaged during hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Does anyone have any information on the progress of rebuilding? Please respond to {email address deleted}. Thank you .....Steve

I love this bowling alley because the lanes are awesome, pinsetters are very good, and it is the best bowling alley on the west bank.

I have bowled there only a few times but it is clean and they had fair prices.
