I lived just down the street from the bowl' always was in there playing video games , pool etc. Used to hide in there when skipping school but a very large security guard was always on top of the rowdy kids , chassing them off. Was glad to have it so close to the house. will never forget an unamed friend stole about 20 bottle of booze from the bar and ran into the Buena Vista apts. Those where the days, there prob still a bottle stashed in the bushes over there!! All in all it was time to go though. Maybe not condos but it was time, who bowls anymore>? J

Sunset Bowl was sold for money, plain and simple. It was sold in the heyday of the housing market, and now those places aren't worth the paperwork signed to get em built. KM Bowl is OK, but it doesn't have the character Sunset/Clairemont Bowl had. Mira Mesa Bowl is better, but a little too far for Mission Beach types. And for the record, the equipment was fine. We bowled there with no complaints, no issues for several years. Plus the food was awesome!

I was born and raised in San Diego and spent the majority of my childhood at what I remember being Clairemont Bowl. I have many wonderful memories of that place. It's where I learned to bowl. It's where I got crushes on the guys who used to be at the door of the Quad Room. It's where I made alot of friends and alot of memories. It's the place my dad almost got a 300 game. I'm saddened to hear it was demolished and condos built in it's place. What a waste. I haven't been back home in almost 36 years. I'd hate to come back now and see the place where my fave bowling alley was.

I was on a plane yesterday to the east coast. The passenger next to me was a 'passionate' bowler. This brought back so many memories of thr Clairemont Bowl, then the Sunset Bowl, and just what a large part of my life this place was. I haven't bowled once since it closed. Rico, Franny, eveyone that worked there, they were my family too. I drove by there and saw some 'crackerbox' condos. What a terrible shame!

I wanted to go here for my 29th B-Day but now it's closed. I guess I'll have to go to nip-ville Kearny Bowl and relive the memories my father had when he was in Vietnam.

Sunset Bowl did not have to close. I worked there for many years and I KNOW it did not have to close. At the time of it's closing real estate was booming. There indeed was a contract that said the bowl had to close. That was when the original owner died. The new owner got around that and kept it. He held on to it for years, but never liked owning a bowling alley. He sold it when he saw the real estate opportunity. Pretty dumb move as he got one lump sum of cash. The bowl was brining it a HUGE profit.

Well, Sunset is now just dust in the wind. Since Sunset Bowl closed I have been bowling at another bowling alley and I never thought I would find another place as good as Sunset and that I would not be happy. Well I personally think that I found a place better then Sunset it's Kearny Mesa Bowl. They have a professional staff, they are friendly and the food is a lot better there then it was at Sunset, not every food needs to be served deep-fried and the variety is better. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed bowling at Sunset when I did, I learned to bowl there and would have never met my husband had I not been bowling there, I have a lot of friends now that I met there and it holds a special place in my heart. But, life goes on and when there are no more bowling alley to bowl at because people can sell them for more money in the residential market I will find another hobby. I think that if the owner would have spent a little money and re-invested in the Bowl it would not have been in such disrepair. I think that it is funny that everyone keeps saying that the equipment was in such bad condition and that it would have cost too much money to get it all fixed then why is it showing up at other bowling alleys in San Diego? I guess it wasn't as bad as they said that it was?? I still believe that they closed it for money reasons; everyone else can think what they want. It is about the almighty dollar. If you are looking for a place to bowl then Kearny Mesa Bowl is a good choice they have Thunder Alley (their version of Cosmic Bowling). During league play there are not a lot of open spaces for the open bowlers because the league bowlers are there all week. Here are a couple of other choices of places to bowl. - Mira Mesa Mira Mesa - Brunswick Premier Lanes Chula Vista - Parkway Bowl El Cajon - Poway Fun Bowl Poway I think that there is one more but, I can not remember it. Have fun.

I grew up two blocks from this place back in the 60's/70's and spent half of my life in there. Bowling, shooting pool, playing foosball, chatting up pretty girls, cherry cokes made from scratch, cleaning the old plastic score sheets, the "Everlasting 49ers and the "Executioners". Tearing it down-I don't think so. The great memories survive forever!

I'm a single parent, my children (boys 15 and 12) really enjoy going to Parkway Bowl in El Cajon on Fletcher Parkway. They have a little something for everyone. Their cafe makes a great breakfast for a nice rainy Saturday morning........I haven't been to too many alleys, but theirs seem nice, we have had great experiences so far....

Okay, to set it straight I worked there and we didn't close for money reasons or greed even though that's what most thought but it's a whole different story. There was a legal contract that was made that said the bowl had to close. There was no offer to keep it open and if there was there would have been to much that needed to be repaired and such. I worked there for 6 years and grew up there so I'm really gonna miss it.

What other alleys in SD have nightime bowling? What are they like?

I have bowled there for 30 years and met my husband there. It holds a lot of memories for me that CAN NOT be taken from me. Sunset Bowl is CLOSED and everyone who worked there are now unemployed. All of the league bowlers are forced to go to other Bowling Alleys. But, because of the size of Sunset (52 lanes)there are only a few bowling places left and those usually have leagues and do not have the room to hold house all of us. From meetings that I have attended about this topic the owner seems to be partnered with the developer and will make a lot more money by helping them get the rezoning by the City of San Diego so that he can sell them to William Lyon Homes for residental then he can if he sold it for commercial use. Someone wanted to buy it to run as a bowling alley and that offer was turned down. I guess that his greed and the money is more important that keeping a 50 year old place of recreation open for people to enjoy. Money talks. Pretty soon with the growth of San Diego it will be more like Los Angeles. I will miss you Sunset Bowl.

So sad to see this wonderful alley closing for something as lame as Condos. What a waste!! Just saw on KUSI news the closing is set for the end of this month. I will HAVE to get over there and enjoy one more day of bowling and hopefully break a pin so I can have a lasting memory. 8/31/05 a wonderful haven in a city that is going to pot, shall be "no more". This is progress, San Diego?

Sunset Bowl is closing August 31st, 2005. It is slated for demolition, to be replaced by 77 condos on it's very valuable land.

Needs repairs and cleanup. Will it be closing this year?

I do not want people to destroy Sunset Bowl because it has been the only bowling place in my whole life that I have gone to. It has been there my whole life I just cannot stand to see it be destroyed for the sake of condos. If people want to make condos, they can just make them somewhere else catch my drift. I mean there are tons of lots open in Clairemont. I will make a riot if they do try to tear it down. I will speak to the manager and keep it standing. I will do anything to keep it open!!!!!!:)(::)(:

I worked at Sunset Bowl for 11 years. It was truly some of the best years I have ever had. I met many lifetime friends with fellow employess as well as wonderful customers. It will be sad when I visit San Diego not to have a fun place to go visit all my friends. The Bowl will be missed....but time moves on.

Hi, I have been bowling at Sunset for about 20 years and it is going to close. The thing that made Sunset special is the staff, they made it home. Thank you for the years of fun. I am going to miss you all...JMS

Just spoke with the staff there and as of now 1/21/05 the closing date is not set. They thought maybe in August. The real reason that they may be closing is due to developers wanting to build condos there. If you want to find out more info just call the alley. They are very friendly.

Also have been informed that the lanes are closing. Sad stuff - my favorite lanes in San Diego. Now where do I bowl????

How do you know it's closing? When is it closing? Been bowling here for the last 4 years and have not heard that rumor?

Comment Date: 11/21/2004 Name: JD
Yes, Sunset is closing down for good...The owner has passed away and his son does not want to continue with running the alley because it belonged to his father.

I'm from Seattle Washington and visited San Diego on vacation and bowled at Sunset. I really enjoyed my time there and have nothing to complain about. Good prices, cool staff.

I heard that Sunset Bowl might be closing down for good. Is this true?

Pete in the Pro Shop was extremely knowledgable and very helpful. He took his time to answer all the questions I had regarding the merchandise in a friendly manner. I recommend getting all your bowling equipment from Pete's place.

I like this place, and am wondering if you may be getting karaoke anytime soon. It would add more to the atmosphere.
